Fabrication of theatre set for Sarasota Ballet

Creation of a theatre set for The Spider’s Feast by Sarasota Ballet, USA. Working to a design by Dick Bird, we worked alongside furniture and interiors fabricator Room Food to fabricate an enormous 3.5m tall plant pot, trowel and a window frame. We also created a set of 10 French braces, used to hold theatre flats. These are no doubt the tallest items ever to come out of our workshop!

Fabricating Sonia Boyce’s In the Castle of My Skin at Eastside Projects

Fabricating the crystalline display structure that forms the central focus of Sonia Boyce’s In the Castle of My Skin exhibition at Eastside Projects.

The display system houses works by Boyce and artists including Anna Barham, Harold Offeh, Flora Parrott and Alberta Whittle alongside selected works from the Middlesbrough Collection at MIMA. The sculpture is based on the crystalline form of the mineral pyrite, known as Fool’s Gold, and is clad in wallpapers made by Boyce since the early 1990s.

Working alongside Boyce and curator Gavin Wade, Plane Structure designed, prototyped and installed this complicated display system, which is a sculpture in its own right.

Workshop improvements

We’ve spent the last few months upgrading our workshop and studio spaces. A previously dead-space at the front of the workshop has been spruced up with new walls, ceiling and lighting be used as a periodic exhibition area or showroom for our furniture and woodwork. Upstairs, we’ve created a new shared area for our studio holders (this involved some tight cutting-in of a large piece of plywood to cover a hole in the floor) and divided up a larger studio into two smaller ones, with new windows and lights.

Fabricating Emma Smith’s Women at Work exhibition

Plane Structure fabricated and installed Women at Work for artist Emma Smith, an exhibition in the Council Chamber at Cambridge’s Guildhall.

The exhibition brings together stories of pre-conception, pregnancy, childbirth and care by Cambridge residents in 2020 with the ambition of raising awareness to the issues that still need addressing today.

Plane Structure created 58 stands for document folders, each one containing the story of an individual woman. The stands give a visual presence to these important stories, which for the first time are given centre stage in the heart of regional power, the Council chamber.
