Stoneywell is a beautifully-preserved example of Arts & Crafts architecture, design and craftsmanship. Built by Ernest Gimson in 1899 for his brother, a Leicester industrialist, this extraordinary building houses many pieces of original Gimson furniture, such as this ladder-back chair, plus pieces from the Barnsley brothers and their circle of artist-craftsmen.
We found the collection to be particularly inspirational for its uncompromising use of materials and honest joints. The organic nature of the architecture is also something that appeals to us – it sits beautifully in its surroundings and doesn’t reveal everything simultaneously.
