Jump-boxes for Birmingham Royal Ballet

We have created a set of jump-boxes for Birmingham Royal Ballet. This commission came from BRB’s Jerwood Centre, a world leader in dance medicine and science that houses state-of-the-art medical and rehabilitation facilities. The boxes will be used to aid dancers’ training and rehabilitation.

Simple bench

This simple bench is made from American white oak and ash with a finish of Danish oil. The top is a single piece and all the other parts are from reclaimed stock. The angular cross bracing is inspired by the stretchers found on many Arts and Crafts dining tables.

Big Art Project at Library of Birmingham

Plane Structure moved the Big Art Project display from Birmingham City University and installed it ast its new home, the Library of Birmingham.

The exhibition allows people to see the proposed ideas for a new public artwork for Birmingham. The five shortlisted artists – Brian Griffiths, Roger Hiorns, Heather and Ivan Morison, Susan Philipsz and Keith Wilson – have made scale versions of their proposed designs.

Plane Structure led the installation of this exhibition, which is open at the Library of Birmingham until 5 December. It then moves to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

Stoneywell: Arts & Crafts inspiration

Stoneywell is a beautifully-preserved example of Arts & Crafts architecture, design and craftsmanship. Built by Ernest Gimson in 1899 for his brother, a Leicester industrialist, this extraordinary building houses many pieces of original Gimson furniture, such as this ladder-back chair, plus pieces from the Barnsley brothers and their circle of artist-craftsmen.

We found the collection to be particularly inspirational for its uncompromising use of materials and honest joints. The organic nature of the architecture is also something that appeals to us – it sits beautifully in its surroundings and doesn’t reveal everything simultaneously.

Stoneywell is run by the National Trust: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/stoneywell

Slanted shelves for Grand Union

Some time ago we made these sloped shelves for exhibition information in the gallery. They’re in MDF, Formica and English oak to compliment the shop we also made for them. It’s nice to see these back in use after a little break.
